A long overdue congratulations to Dylan Maghini and Bhatt Lab Alumni Fiona Tamburini and Ryan Brewster on the publication of their paper “Short- and long-read metagenomics of urban and rural South African gut microbiomes reveal a transitional composition and undescribed taxa” in Nature Communications. We were overjoyed to be able to celebrate with Fiona and Dylan in person and walk down memory lane!!

We enjoyed getting to know each other a bit better during our Bhatt Lab retreat!! We couldn’t be more thankful that it was possible this year. Big congratulations to Dr. Ben Siranosian on his thesis defense!!! In true Bhatt Lab fashion, we celebrated with a Ben poop emoji piñata and chocolate cake. While he will be sorely missed, we are excited for what he’ll accomplish as a newly minted PhD working at the new Francisco start-up Loyal.

Warmest welcome to Dr. Rachael Chanin who is joining us as a Postdoctoral Scholar from Dr. Sebastian Winter’s Lab at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center! We’re excited she just completed the move from Texas to the Bay Area along with her dog Jake, who’s already stolen our hearts and we haven’t even met yet!

A big congratulations to Bhatt Lab alumna Dr. Tessa Andermann whose Phase I trial of a Fructo-Oligosaccharide Prebiotic in in Adults Undergoing Allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation was accepted for publication in Transplantation and Cellular Therapy! In other exciting news, the work by Dr. Aravind Natarajan and Alvin Han on developing a standardized method to analyze SARS-CoV-2 viral RNA levels in stool has been accepted for publication in Nature Communications! You can read more about it ahead of publication here!
